Enda Kenny says he doesn’t regret branding remarks made by Donald Trump as “racist and dangerous” but added Ireland must work closely with the next US President.

During his election campaign Mr Trump caused outrage by making several derogatory remarks about women, Muslims and Mexicans, which were slammed by the Taoiseach at the time.

Mr Kenny said Ireland will have to continue its close relationship with the White House but still stands by his comments.

He added: “I made my comment in the Dail on comments that had been made by the then candidate.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has revealed his concern over the 14 national elections set to take place in Europe this year – including in France, the Netherlands and Italy – and the prospect of increasing support for far-right parties. He said creating strong, viable economies with high employment across the continent was the only way to prevent the rise of the far-right, and called on the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, to speed up the introduction of a digital single market.

He said: “I wrote to President Tusk following the last meeting of the European Council about a digital single market.

“That had the support of, I think, 15 government ministers to say get on with this. For 30 years working to remove the digital borders within Europe.

“We’ve set a date now for 2018 to make that a reality.

“It’s not just to have it, it’s also a recognition of the value of small medium enterprises, entrepreneurs, innovators and creators. Because that’s going to save money and create jobs.

“And you cannot have a situation where in some countries you have a 50%

unemployment rate among a million people. That is a recipe for disaster.

“These are matters of concern every day for European countries. How do you turn it around?

“My general belief is that when Britain has exited Europe, you’ve got 27 countries with 400-plus million people.

“We should be making decisions about where Europe wants to be in five, 10, 15 years. There are decisions that can be made there and I for one would be anxious to see that they move on to them.”
