Mayweather and McGregor have long been linked with fighting each other.

Floyd Mayweather has claimed he offered Conor McGregor £12million to take him on in a boxing fight. The pair have continued to tease a super-fight for the best part of a year with fans growing increasingly excited at the prospect of the two biggest characters in combat sports going head-to-head. And retired undefeated boxer Mayweather, who has not fought since September 2015, revealed talks have taken place yet have so far been unsuccessful. Floyd Mayweather made an appearance on ESPN First Take on Wednesday morning.

"We can talk about splitting the PPV (pay-per-view) but we are the A-side.

"How can a guy talk about $20m (£16.5m) or $30m (£24.7m) if he's not made eight or nine? Is the fight going to happen? We're working on it."

McGregor - currently taking a break from mixed martial arts as he prepares to become a father for the first time - took to social media later on Wednesday with his reaction to Mayweather.

The 28-year-old posted a picture on Twitter of himself standing over the fallen figure, wearing one boxing belt and holding aloft two others.

Bob Arum: Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather fight is 'absolute nonsense' - 'Dana White is playing a game' .
Long-time boxing promoter Bob Arum (and I’m sure he's not alone) is tired of hearing about a potential boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion, Conor McGregor. That’s because the bout makes absolutely no sense in an arena, whether inside a boxing ring or mixed martial arts (MMA) cage. Furthermore, Arum says if "Notorious" does want to test his skills in a boxing ring, he wouldn’t fare too well ... not even against a novice.
