Parkour , or freerunning , was developed in France in the 1980s. The United Kingdom has become the first country to officially recognise parkour as a sport . Parkour UK chief executive Eugene Minogue said the sport is now in a vast majority of primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, with the UK also boasting 50 Parkour Parks. He added: "All this in just over seven years , an amazing achievement and testament to the unique and diverse parkour / freerunning community in the UK, which is world leading."

Parkour UK chief executive Eugene Minogue has welcomed the decision by the Home Country Sports Councils to recognise the discipline - also known as freerunning - as a sport.

But he insisted the news will not change its fundamental principle of non-competitiveness - and there is no chance of pursuing a place in the Olympic Games any time soon.

Sports minister Tracey Crouch made the announcement on Tuesday, which means Parkour UK can now bid for government and National Lottery funds for programmes to improve participation levels.

The UK is the first country in the world to recognise parkour - which sees people run, jump and climb through predominantly urban terrains - in such a way.

Minogue told Press Association Sport: "Parkour is predominantly a non-competitive sport. It's about challenging yourself as an individual to overcome various problems.

"We don't have the desire or the aspiration currently to take parkour towards the Olympics.

"Unlike 99 per cent of other sports, our goals aren't around creating elite athletes and podium places. Our goals about encouraging the individual to better themselves - not others."

Minogue said prospective funding would be channelled towards raising awareness and delivering the appropriate coaching and advice - as well as addressing societal concerns.

He added: "Twenty years ago people would frown on skateboarding and BMX and assume people must be up to no good, and now both those sports are in the Olympics.

"We are starting from that position. In society these days everything is codified and you have to do everything in a certain way - but in parkour all you need is a pair of trainers."

Parkour originated in France in the 1980s and takes its name from Parcours du Combattant - a method of French military training involving obstacle courses.
